As many fans have speculated over recent months, a profound change has occurred at the heart of the band as the story of Duran Duran moves into a new chapter. The trio of Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes & Warren Cuccurullo is coming to an end; the upcoming Japanese dates will be their last together after which Warren will be bound for America and a new project with his pre-Duran band, Missing Persons.

Simon & Nick are to be reunited with original band members Roger, Andy and John Taylor for the first time in 15 years.

"It's something we are very much looking forward to. There has always been an incredible chemistry and musical energy when we have got together. We are all very excited about the prospect of seeing what we can create."

An album will be scheduled for release some time in 2002

Conventional wisdom holds that language acquisition in adulthood cannot rest on the same brain mechanisms used in processing a native language—that is, a language learned later in life is processed in a fundamentally different and less automatic way than is a mother tongue. But the results of a new study, described in the early online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, challenge this so-called critical period hypothesis, suggesting that people can in fact process a second language in much the same way as they process their first.

Execs resign over Welsh language issue

Concern over the Welsh language content of Radio Ceredigion (based in Aberystwyth) has forced two senior executives of the station to resign. Chairman Geraint Davies and station manager Ellen ap Gwynn quit their posts at a meeting last month, after becoming disillusioned with the amount of Welsh broadcast on the station. Local AM Elin Jones has raised the pair's concerns with the Radio Authority, citing concerns that the station is not giving equal treatment to the English and Welsh languages.

"Welsh is being sidelined out of peak hours by the new management," Ms Jones, a former board member of Radio Ceredigion, told the Western Mail.

"I regret the resignation of the chair and board member, whom I know have been frustrated at their attempts to ensure that Welsh is maintained at peak listening hours. The current licence for broadcasting demands equal parity for Welsh and English. Radio Ceredigion is now failing dismally to meet its commitment to the Welsh language."

The Radio Authority has recently discussed the matter of programming with the station.

Another language row has blown up over plans for no Welsh speakers to be on the new broadcasting industry's proposed new regulatory body.

The government's proposal to merge the five organisations which currently oversee the industry have come under fire from Cylch Yr Iaith, which campaigns for better standards in Welsh-language broadcasting.

"This one body would be exceptionally powerful and have a great influence" said spokesman Ieuan Wyn, in response to the government's rejection of the National Assembly's request to have a Welsh member.

"The Welsh language has to have a firm place within the regulation of communications to promote broadcast output in Welsh in a period when Anglo-American products are drowning Welsh-language life," he said.
